“Admissions” at for-profit universities

Share

It’s been a while since I’ve gotten up on my soapbox about for-profit universities. But it turns out I don’t need to because, as usual, Tressie McMillan Cottom has written far more eloquently and intelligently on the topic than I ever could.

In her insightful post titled “How “Admissions” Works Differently At For-Profit Colleges: Sorting and Signaling” Tressie pulls back the curtain and gives all of us an honest view into the world of for-profit admissions …errrrrr ….enrollment.

That alone is worth the read. But that’s only the beginning.

She takes the discussion one step further to talk about the question that never gets asked. Most people focus on the for-profit industry as an entity and debate its good vs. evil role in society. However, the real question that needs to be addressed is: why and how does it exist in the first place?

As Tressie puts it:

“But the why and the how of it is much more complicated and, spoiler alert, no one comes off as the good guy.”
