Dogs in dorms.

I’ve written before about how the Millennials are in for an unpleasant surprise when they get into the real world. But, not so much if they attend Stephens College, MIT, SUNY Canton, Eckerd College or Washington & Jefferson College.
To make the “transition” easier, these colleges are now allowing students to have dogs in their dorm rooms. Gawker.com really sums it up best in their title, “Dogs in Dorm Rooms: The Only Way College Could Get Grosser”. I mean, really? Unwashed laundry, keg stands, unwashed laundry and now DOGS?

The other issue is that it plays even more into the notion that these Millennials have to be coddled and protected.

“I recognize this as being a trend that is tied directly to the whole notion of helicopter parenting,” said Dianne Lynch, who became president of Stephens last year and who is herself the owner of two dogs and two cats. “It’s harder and harder for students to leave home. Bringing this particular piece of home with them may make that separation easier.”

Well, good luck with that. Millennials have always had an adult figure in their lives taking care of the harder things in life. The Helicopter Parents already come to campus to do laundry, check out the food in the cafeteria to see if it’s up to their standards, ask for HVAC reports from Maintenance to check mold levels in the ducts and generally make sure their child is being treated like a Prince.

With that kind of royal treatment, the students don’t even take care of the most rudimentary chores. Who thinks that adding pet care to the mix is going to be a good idea???
