Republican’s announce need for image rehab

While my first reaction to this news was “YA THINK?”. However, it’s actually worth a deeper discussion.

Confession: I’m a  Republican. But, as my Liberal friends will attest to, I’m not a Republican who just spouts whatever political stance The Drudge Report tells me to take.

In addition, I’m a marketing strategy guy. I’m fascinated with taking in all the information that’s available and then working out how to translate that into action. So, this news story of a Republican rebrand is right up my alley.

Even if you’re not a political junkie like me, you still know that Obama was re-elected. And he won, among many other reasons, because the Republican candidates didn’t reach out to any voting populations other than white, middle class Americans.

So what’s a party to do? It’s simple – look at the numbers. Every good marketing campaign starts with data. In this case, it’s demographics and socio-economic indicators. The GOP needs to look at the changing landscape and adapt their issues to understand the needs of these people.

Of course, as with everything in politics, there are people who are saying it will save the party and there are people who are saying it’s a superficial waste of time.

What do you think?
